Bell Tower Repairs - Fundraising
The Challenge:

In May 2018, the Tweed & Area Arts Council (T&AAC) learned that the main foyer/bell tower at the Marble Arts Centre (MAC) in Actinolite has some structural issues that resulted in our taking a decision to re-locate upcoming events during the period May to August 2018. T&AAC invested $10,000 of its own funds for an expert consultant report to define the structural issues and prioritize them as 'essential', 'necessary' or 'desirable'. The essential repair work will cost an estimated additional $25,000.

Status of Repairs:

The priority essential work to remove the bell and install a reinforcing floor has just been completed - and the safety-related restrictions on use of the MAC have been lifted! This will allow the MAC to re-open in time for fall events such as the 'Ontario Festival of Small Halls' performances by Barney Bentall and the Mayhemingways on Sept. 14

( ). Remaining essential work includes fixing the tower roof (we are hoping that insurance will cover that!), and drainage improvements to divert water flow from the roof/driveway away from the building.

Upcoming Fundraising:

Our next fundraiser is the Fish Fry at 'Art in the Park' on August 4 (see below). The event will host 40 arts and crafts vendors, the Fish Fry, Theatre Organic's production of Oscar Wilde's 'A Florentine Tragedy', live music, and a Children's Activity Area.

Status of Fundraising

We initiated fundraising in early July, and have received generous donations from visitors, community members and local service clubs such as the Tweed Lions (see Community Update #2). We are grateful to Don DeGenova and Chuck Mustard for hosting a garden party fundraiser at their home on July was a hot and humid day, but that didn't stop very generous supporters from Tweed and farther away in Newburgh, Belleville, Lonsdale, Melrose, Campbellford, Madoc and beyond! The event brought in $7,000 (and counting). We extend a sincere thank you to everyone, particularly our hosts. As of July 21, 2018 we are at 50% of our goal!

The generosity of the Tweed and area community is quite simply amazing. We are very thankful for the support we have received from individuals and organizations. T&AAC is a volunteer organization, and membership is open to all artists or those who support the arts. T&AAC is a registered charity; tax receipts are issued for memberships and donations. If you are able to assist us in completing this essential work, it would be gratefully appreciated!
